Oxidized Sterling Silver Dipped Pendant and Bracelet with Crystal Studded Peace Sign Dangle by Ubuntu
“No one is whole without the other” is the embodiment of the Bantu word Ubuntu (pronounced U-bune-tu). An African philosophy of peace and harmony, it inspired a jewelry collection that through its combined symbols, represents oneness and unity of the human spirit.
Created by Nancy Epstein, Ubuntu Jewelry is wearable art that is part social statement, part fashion statement. With nearly twenty years in the design world, Nancy has built a successful career creating innovative products sold in some of the world’s largest retail stores – from picture frames, to fancy dog dishes, to fine jewelry.
Beckoned to a greater calling to do good and wanting to do more than simply make pretty things, Nancy drew on her experience and passion designing stuff to create jewelry that speaks of tolerance and compassion. By combining six of the most recognized spiritual and political symbols rich in individual cultural traditions, she expresses the transformative power of Ubuntu in a beautiful jewelry line that is one part chic, one part promoter of one world for all. The unifying symbol, the peace sign, is a central design element in each piece to remind us all to respect one another for our individuality.
With a strong commitment to giving back, Ubuntu donates 10% for every dollar raised by sales to two non-profit organizations that are dedicated to promoting peace and environmentalism – Religions for Peace and 1% for the Planet. Ubuntu jewelry is available at select retailers and online.
We received the Oxidized Sterling Silver Dipped Pendant and Bracelet with Crystal Studded Peace Sign Dangle. The pendant hangs off an 18” five strand mesh-like sterling silver chain and retails for $95. The bracelet has a leather strap that is ½” wide by 7” long (adjustable) and retails for $75. Both pieces arrived in gift-ready kraft boxes wrapped in raffia. Absolutely gorgeous!
From the packaging, to the design, to the craftsmanship, and the quality overall, these pieces are totally to-die-for! The chic factor is high and the message it imparts, profound. I for one, feel privileged and therefore proud to be able to wear these pieces without repercussions. People from many parts of the world don’t have the freedom to express their desire for peaceful co-existence, so it is with pride that I wear these pieces conveying hope for one world.
The bracelet exhibits six signs – the Taoist Yin Yang, the Muslim Star and Crescent, the Jewish Star of David, the Christian Cross, the Female/Male Equality Symbol, and the Peace Sign. The pendant has the same symbols with the addition of another which represents the Hindu Aum.
Of course, whatever message you’re trying to convey, you want to do it in a most fashionable way. With the pendant hanging on an 18” strand, the best way to showcase it is with a low-cut neckline like this top by Ella Moss. It’s fabulous with dark silhouettes, creating a contrast with the silver and the crystal studs. The bracelet has a very hip, rock edge to it that I just love. It goes so well with dark wash jeans, black boots, and a gray top.
If you’ve been looking for socially-conscious, statement pieces that convey not only your fashion sense but your inner being as well, Ubuntu is where you need to head to.
