Butterfly Collection Cuff and Ring by Onen Surono
Born in the island of Papua in Indonesia, Nenny Surono, better known by her nickname Onen, has always admired the beauty of her natural surroundings. Early on, her parents recognized her artistic abilities and enrolled her in one form of art class or another.
Fast forward to her college years and the art classes stopped when Nenny was unable to go to Art College. Reluctantly, she followed her parent’s advise to enter Law School. From there, she went to Switzerland for a post-graduate degree in management. Europe re-awakened her interest in the arts.
Following Europe in her pursuit of continuing education is the United States where she traveled extensively and became acutely aware of how people dressed and accessorized. This stirred up artful memories of her hometown and eventually she listened to the call to go back home and create art.
In 2002, Nenny returned to Indonesia where she now has a studio producing collections for her label ‘Onen Surono’. Her lines include jewelry, bags, shoes, accessories, and tees. Her studio does not mass produce as she values the quality and exclusivity of the pieces she designs.
We received the cuff and ring from Onen Surono’s Butterfly Jewelry Collection. Both are hand crafted and hand finished sterling silver. The cuff retails for $262 and the ring retails for $87.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! The cuff has an intricate openwork design with oxidized silver in the background. I’ve never seen anything like it before.
Typically, openwork in a cuff means that the bracelet has cut outs so that when you wear it, you see your wrist through the cut outs. This particular bracelet is hollowed out wherein the cut outs only go through the top layer. When you wear it, you see the bottom layer of the cuff, instead of your wrist (it’s not see-through). That’s unique all by itself. But what makes it really stand out is that the bottom layer is oxidized, so it’s all black. Therefore, rather than seeing silver through the cut outs, you see black which makes the openwork design stand out fabulously.
It’s super chic but definitely not trendy, a piece that will most certainly be a classic in my ever growing jewely collection. It goes with everything but it truly stands out when paired with a well-tailored dress such as this immaculate white one from Dolce & Gabanna, or with a fun, flirty frock like this jersey dress by Blumarine. It’s a great accessory because it enhances an outfit, it doesn’t overpower it.
Onto the ring – it’s a miniature version of the cuff. It comes in a size 7 but because it is an exact replica of the cuff, it automatically means that it’s re-sizeable. You can’t make it smaller but can definitely enlarge it. It’s a little bulky but quite comfortable to wear. I love wearing it on my middle finger. Initially, I wasn’t sure if wearing the cuff and ring together would be too much because they are exactly alike. I was pleasantly surprised when I wore them together because it works. I even wear them on the same arm.
I adore this butterfly collection and I for one am looking forward to reviewing the rest of Onen Surono’s product lines. If you’re interested in learning more about this collection, check out their site for contact information.
