King of Rock Black Shirt by Random Nicole

randomnicoletee

While attending graduate school for creative writing in San Francisco, Nicole Stevenson started painting.  After her first art show sold out, she moved down to Los Angeles to make a go of it as an artist.

Selling her mixed media paintings on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, tourists and locals walking by often paused to adore her illustrative paintings but kept asking where the paintings can be put?  She thought, “put it on”.  That’s when she changed gears and began making art for people to wear instead of hang on the wall.

Two years later, her line of unique wearable art called Random Nicole, features the hip chix, birds, motorcycles, flowers, quirky people, poetry, and other novel imagery once reserved for her paintings.  Nicole says “random means being inspired by everything and getting to follow every whim”.

A jane of all trades, Nicole’s interests range from cooking to gardening, to playing music, to photography, and all of it comes out in her work.  She always hated the idea of having to choose one thing to do for the rest of her life.  Designing artful clothing lets her do everything she loves.  She might spend the day playing music with friends then design a tee with floating guitars, or she may hang around in the garden and then her next skirt is covered in daisies.

Her collection of clothing and accessories for women, men, and children features eccentric yet classic designs.  Each piece is created one at a time.  Nicole pairs up fabric, trims, and appliqués with hand-printed images to ensure that each item is unique.  Her fabrics range from recycled vintage home fabrics to contemporary prints.

We received the King of Rock Black Shirt from Random Nicole’s Women’s Shirts Collection.  It retails for $61.

There are so many things I like about this shirt – the ¾ sleeve, the wide band on the sleeves and the waist, the wide scoop neck with the fuschia trim, the printed crown appliqué on the left shoulder, and the rockin’ crest – the centerpiece of this creation.

In the photo, the shirt almost looks like a tunic but in person, the shirt is not that long.  It falls just above the hip line.  The waist band creates a nice feminine fit, hugging my hips, and is quickly becoming my go-to shirt when I can’t decide what to pair up with my low rise jeans.  In this cold weather, I always complete this look with my motocross jacket – it gives me a rockin’ look without really trying.

The fuschia trim has tiny black polka dots and the crown appliqué has pink and fuschia flowers.  Not exactly the trimmings you would expect to go along with a rock and roll crest but that is what Random Nicole is all about – eccentric and unexpected.

The crest, in gold fleck print is a very hip design with lions, a crown, some fleur de lis, and bird angels.  With all these elements, Nicole was at a loss about what should be at the center of the crest.  In comes James of the LA glam rock band Jet Fuel who came up with the perfect fit – flying V guitars of course!

I’m not a rocker chick but what’s cool about this shirt is that it fuses rock and roll with feminine elements.  It allows me to pull off a rocker chick look, in a non-rocker kind of way.

If you love expressing your own style, if you like eclectic designs, if you like wearable art, you must pay a visit to Random Nicole.  With unexpected, yet cohesive pairings of pattern, colors, and images, it is a place where you will find a refreshing array of items that will break you out of the monotony of mass-produced pieces.
