Paris Belt and Barrette by Yosifa Penina
Graduating with honors from the Industrial Design Department at the Rhode Island School of Design, Jules Sherman was poised for success from the beginning. Designing fashion and home accessories for major retailers and manufacturers such as the Limited Brands and Restoration Hardware, it is no surprise that she would eventually branch off on her own with the establishment of her own line, Yosifa Penina.
As founder and designer, her inspiration came from a combination of interests in flexible materials and a love of illustration, pattern and color. Yosifa Penina is a line of unique and functional fashion accessories for active women, inspired by art, nature, modern materials, and casual, un-fussy elegance. The collection includes belts, barrettes, hair clips, luggage tags, and pouches. They are available from retail stores nationwide and in select online stores.
We received the Paris Belt along with its matching barrette. The belt measures approximately 37.5” x 1.25”, fits sizes 0 through 12, and retails for $45. It is made of molded PVC which is 100% lead and nickel free. The barrette measures 3.6” x 1.2” and retails for $12. It is also made of molded PVC with a French clip metal barrette mechanism.
I don’t know about you but when I read PVC in the material description, I had to ask if I was reviewing a fashion accessory or a building material? I saw flashes of pipes, hoses, and tubings in my head. Needless to say, I was anxious to see them in person.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised. When I saw the belt and the barrette, the PVC material was the last thing that entered my mind. The texture and pattern got my attention first and foremost, then the color. The 3D pattern is not only gorgeous, it also provides texture. As to the color – gray belts are tough to find, colored belts in general actually, so the fact that the YP belt is not black, brown, burgundy, or white made me fall in like right away.
My belt collection covers the gamut – leather, fabric, metal, wood. Each of these has their own unique characteristics. What makes YP belts distinctive is that they combine multiple unique characteristics into one – flexibility, texture, color, pattern, and washability.
Apart from the function, it’s a good looking belt period. It’s chic and I love that the end of the belt tucks inside, not outside as is typical. It gives it a polished look, no need for belt loops. This comes in handy when I want to use it as a waist belt because the end is longer than when I use it as a hip belt. It gets beautifully hidden, rather than wrapping around, looking like I’m wearing a belt that’s way too long for me.
Speaking of length, this belt is the perfect accessory for a long, fitted black or granite grey turtleneck and a pair of dark wash jeans - effortlessly chic outfit for the cold weather. Now, if you thought you already had every type of belt available in the known world, think again. Get a YP belt and not only will you add tons of color, pattern, and texture into your collection, you’ll also never look at a PVC pipe the same way ever again!
